The Palermo Catacombs stretch through interconnected galleries carved into volcanic rock, covering an area of around 300 square meters (3230 square feet). These burial chambers hold about 2,000 skeletons and mummified bodies, including, according to legend, the remains of the Count of Cagliostro.
Mummies were placed in different galleries according to their gender, social status, and profession. The oldest corridor is occupied by the Capuchin Friars, who are mummified in the traditional garments of their order. There's also a room dedicated to priests, preserved in their grand religious robes.
Other areas of interest include the women's corridor, the Chapel of the Crucifix that holds the bodies of young virgin women, the men's corridor, the Chapel of the Children, and the corridor of families.

Once we're inside, we'll explore the different sections the catacombs are organised into, such as the area dedicated to the Capuchin Friars, the tomb of young Rosalia Lombardo (known as "Sleeping Beauty" due to her lifelike appearance), or the corridor dedicated to notable figures such as the sculptors Filippo Pennino and Lorenzo Marabitti.
